Anti Adware

There are important differences between adware and other types of malicious code found on the Internet. While viruses and worms are usually designed to simply wreak havoc or compromise security, adware has a far different purpose built into its design. Adware is specifically created to advertise goods and services to the owner of the infected computer. This can be a subtle endeavor, such as serving the occasional pop-up related to the page, which a user is currently viewing, or a very destructive one, essentially rendering the computer useless. Anti adware software needs to be provided with specific types of security that intercepts these threats.

Adware is oftentimes downloaded as a Trojan package. These types of software advertise themselves as being one type of software but are bundled with the malicious adware code. The adware installs when the user voluntarily installs the software they downloaded. Anti adware programs are generally provided with a database of such programs and will interrupt such installs, whether they are voluntary or forced via a website.

While anti adware software provides defense, a user must exercise a good deal of intelligence to overcome the threat. Adware is not just bundled with off-brand and obviously trick-laden software. Sometimes it comes from legitimate sites whose owners have a bit too much ethical flexibility where advertising methods are concerned. Make certain you actually read the license that comes with any free software. If software denotes itself as advertiser-supported, it's a good sign that your computer will be loaded with more than you expect when you click "next." Even the best anti adware software can only do so much against poor usage habits.

If adware is installed, anti adware software will generally be capable of shutting down and removing the software from the system. Even in these cases, however, the process can take a long time and can easily interrupt an entire day's worth of work. Anti adware software must also be updated as new threats present themselves every day and the software needs to know what these new threats are and how to remove them. Security software will generally ask for permission to update and it should always be given, no matter what one is doing at the time.

Adware is a very real and potentially devastating threat. Though not a virus or worm per se, it is certainly every bit as destructive and can seriously compromise security.
